What are space-based services?

Within the UK, we use various space-based services, such as satellite communication and remote sensing technology. These space-based services are linked to satellites which are in space orbiting around the Earth. It is hard to reach these satellites when they are in orbit, therefore there is a risk that if they get damaged essential services on the ground could be impacted.

Within the UK satellites are linked to a variety of services, such as:

  • Banking
  • Communications
  • Emergency services.
  • Transport services, including navigation.
  • A range of essential government services.

Services related to geographical positioning, navigation and timing are also at risk from other technical failures and malicious activity.

If these services were impacted there would be large impacts not only locally, but globally. We therefore need to plan for a disruption to these services so that we are prepared if it happens.
