Major Accident Hazard Pipelines in Hampshire and Isle of Wight are used to transport natural gas. Whilst these pipelines are closely monitored, there is always a risk of damage to pipelines occurring. If a pipeline carrying natural gas is damaged, there could be significant risks including extreme noise (louder than safe hearing levels), a risk of fire and damaged ground due to the gas escaping at a high-speed.
Under the Pipeline Safety Regulations (1996), Local Authorities are required to write Emergency Plans for pipelines. This plan is trained and exercised by multi-agency partners.
